The Gift of Giving

Last year at this time, I was packing for a two month trip to South Africa. It was an adventure planned to brighten the painful shadow that my Mother's December 20, 2004 death had cast upon the festive season. And what a wonderful experience it was for my Dad and I to undertake this journey together. We met old friends and made new ones. We were treated to endless stunning vistas and an abundance of spectacular wildlife. After celebrating Christmas at a secluded lake lodge, we welcomed the New Year to the sound of Zulu drums in Kruger Park. And in January I reconnected with a dear friend whom I first met in January 1977, when she was an exchange student from the prosperous British-African colony of Rhodesia.

Much has changed in the intervening years. Rhodesia has become Zimbabwe and its former prosperity is now a distant memory. My friend is now a mother of three and a highly respected, award winning human rights worker who is making a huge difference to thousands of people. She and I met for dinner in Melville, a trendy suburb in north Johannesburg, where we attempted to catch up on lives that had been cursorily shared through sporadic e-mails. Seated on the restaurant's sidewalk patio, our table became a island around which people flowed as they courteously, but desperately, sought buyers for their handicrafts. My friend explained that most were Zimbabwean refugees and went on to share some shocking details of the recent events in her homeland.

In 2005 the Zimbabwean government undertook an initiative called  "Operation Murambatsvina" (clear the filth) which has displaced 700,000 people who had be resident of poorer communities for up to 30 years. Since then, 2.4 million people (one quarter of the country's population) have been affected in varying degrees. Those who were displaced have been living in tents and shacks made of sticks and plastic, with no access to clean water, sewage or electricity. Because they were relocated far from their former homes, they lost their jobs and their access to the few employment opportunities that exist in a country where the unemployment rate is 80%  Their children lost their access to schools and/or their ability to pay for school fees, books and uniforms. The high incidence of HIV (27%) means that many of the displaced families are headed by elderly grandmothers raising grandchildren or children raising siblings who would otherwise become destitute. Mental illnesses actively compete with an army of physical diseases to claim those living in temporary shanty towns, which are woefully inadequate long-term shelters.

In 2005, the United Nations Special Envoy noted that 'the humanitarian consequences (of Operation Murambatsvina) are enormous. It will take several years before the people and society as a whole can recover."  Today Zimbabweans are worse off than people in Afghanistan or Iraq. They have the lowest life expectancies on earth, only 34 for women and 37 for men (down from over 60 just a decade ago) and more people die of preventable disease in Zimbabwe every week than are killed by the war in Iraq....

In this season of giving, please visit http://www.solidaritypeacetrust.org/ and view the reports and videos posted on-line. Then write to your elected representative and ask them to pressure the leaders of this small and blighted African nation to cease their violent and repressive policies. The situation in Zimbabwe is dire but it can be corrected if we give the gifts of our voices raised in protest; the gifts of our outrage and compassion.  And if you can feed a family, even just  for a day, ($1) you will give the gift of hope to people who have no voice, no choice and a future that few of us could bear to imagine, let alone experience.  Our gifts will sustain them in their fight to survive and strengthen their belief that one day they will once have the chance to work and educate their children, so that they, in turn, have an even better future with even more choices.  Just $30 will feed a family for a month, which is incredible in a country where food is scarce and inflation has topped 1000% this year. Donate through donate@miboso.com at www.PayPal.com. Claim the gift that giving offers by making a difference in our world this holiday season. Others are not "taking care of this issue." It is getting worse, not better. Make a difference, by raising your voice, heart or wallet, today!

And in the words of Dickens's beloved Christmas Carols' tiny hero, "God bless us, every one!"

Are you ready to put an Authentic Personal Brand (APB) on your genius? An APB distils "who you are" into an easily understood essence that attracts the people and opportunities that are a perfect fit for you!

Who needs a personal brand? The short answer is; professionals, employees and entrepreneurs who want to fulfil their potential by leveraging their strengths and living from their values. More precisely, Miboso's APB clients are highly intelligent, extremely well educated men and women in their 40's and 50's who are so diversely talented, they have difficulty finding their focus. Experienced, accomplished and very successful in conventional terms, they yearn to live life differently, more consciously and richly. They want to make a difference, live their dreams, fulfill their purpose, and in so doing, find meaning and satisfaction.

  WEB MARKETING MAGIC
Contributed by our resident Marketing Magician, Kathy Hendershot Hurd

This month, let's talk about how Back Linking, or a link campaign, will help your website gain higher rankings with the search engines. Back linking involves getting other relevant websites to create links to your website. Sounds easy, doesn't it? Just send out requests to other web site owners asking them to link to your site, you in turn link to theirs and VIOLA: instant web site success.

Ah, but it's not that easy. Last month, I shared with you my tale of the search for back links going horribly awry. A poor unsuspecting web site owner who had registered his domain name with Go Daddy found himself in a no win situation. His link request sent to another site was reported as S-P-A-M to his domain name registrar. So he found himself without the use of his 24 domain names and facing a $4,776 ransom request for their safe return. That was just one of many pot holes on the road to successful back linking.
This month, we'll look at bad neighborhoods.

When I was a kid on vacation with my family, I could be assured that my father would make a wrong turn
and we would end up in the worst neighborhood any city has to offer. The tell-tale signs that we were entering a bad area were easy to spot. From my vantage point in the back seat, I learned to quickly recognize the deteriorating condition of the roadside buildings and the increasing frequency of graffiti, not
to mention the appearance and demeanor of the residents, as a prelude to war in the front seat of the car. Read more

  BREAKING THROUGH
According to my recent interview with Michael Bungay Stanier, we all get a little stuck every now and then and need some help to get ourselves un-stuck.

The more than 60 stories in Breaking Through; Getting Past the Stuck Points In Your Life, an anthology edited by Barbara Stanny, will help you get unstuck and back on your road to success. It offers practical ideas, useful tips, simple exercises, mediations and processes in your toolbox. I am a contributor as is my friend Carol Adrienne and my colleague Marcia Wieder.  My story is called "Writer, Producer, Star!" (p 76) and I hope you'll enjoy my observations on how our lives do (and don't) imitate those of our favourite screen characters.

For more on getting "unstuck" check out Michael Bungay Stanier's award winning products and programs; "Get Unstuck and Get Going" and "Eight Irresistible Principles of Fun."  Listen to our interview at www.mibosoradio.com

  BRAND BUILDING BLOCKS WHITE PAPER
People often say to me: “I already have a logo and website, what else do I need for my brand?” Another frequent question is "How can I connect all of my different products and websites into one brand without confusing prospective customers?"

The Brand Building Blocks White Paper was written to answer just these questions. Using a "brand-as-a-building" metaphor, I explain the structure, benefits and uses of a well developed brand. Because just as a building is a composite of concrete, bricks, beams, wiring, plumbing, wall board, roofing materials, etc., a personal brand is a composite of an individual’s values, strengths, talents, attitudes, opinions - even their unique sense of humor!

This report will make it easier to evaluate what you’ve already built and identify
where you need to do some demolition, renovation or new construction. So read it and please e-mail me if you have questions or want to know how to install missing "tiles, insulation or ducting." E-mail us to get your copy (and to enter to win prizes!)

CLIENT SPOTLIGHT (A New Regular Feature)
I met Karin Bauer in 1999 when we worked together to merge her creative talents and business strengths into the single overarching brand of Career Track Coach. This was a company she formed around her CoachTrack software, a product  developed to help coaches get their practices "on track" by easily organizing their client and business data. In 2002 Karin sold this business and followed her heart to explore the confluence of spirituality and art. She unearthed and grew her talent by focusing her time and energy on painting and exhibiting. In 2005, Karin's love for inner exploration and personal growth inspired her to build the art therapy-style coaching program, Art Guidance Cards, an on-line coaching service that uses interpretive art, journaling and self-exploration to give people deep self-insight.

Karin has a well earned reputation for developing quality, innovative products and programs which I invite you to explore! Check out her websites, and use the wayback machine to see how she has evolved herself over the years. Kudos to Karin for having the courage to follow her heart, uncover new talents and continually reinvent herself  in her pursuit of creative expression and service to others!

  BOOKSHELF  (A New Regular Feature)
Quiet Leadership: Six Steps to Transforming Performance at WorkDavid Rock's Quiet Leadership: Help People Think Better, Don't Tell Them What to Do! explains HOW coaching works. His findings firmly counter the mystical, magical, "warm and fuzzy" detractions coaching has endured in recent years. Citing findings in neuro-science research, Rock makes a case for leveraging what we know about how people think in order to enhance their performance. His
6-steps are "Think About Thinking" (let people think things through without telling them what to do, while remaining "solutions-focused"); "Listen for Potential" (be a sounding board for employees); "Speak with Intent" (clarify and streamline conver-sation); "Dance Toward Insight" (communicate in ways that promote other people's insights); "CREATE New Thinking" (helping people turn their insights into habits"); and "Follow Up" to ensure ongoing improved performance. As intriguing as this is conceptually, colleagues report that its application, delivers results quickly!
